I’m going to make this as anonymous as I can. I like drawing My Little Pony fanart a lot and I wouldn’t say my style is as original as can be, but I do have specific ways of drawing them that you don’t see in the show. My friends comment often how they like the way I draw them. And it makes me feel happy to know I can draw them in a somewhat different style than the show, but still keep them looking like G5 ponies. Anyway, one day one of my friends said that they were going to try a specific part of my style. Of course I was ok with this. I experiment with other styles often, and I’m not the only artist who does this specific thing to their ponies. I can’t remember seeing much pony art from him (we’re online friends) afterwards, but then something else that happened kind of shocked me. My other good friend started using this trait herself. And I don’t mind her using it, it’s just she didn’t at least tell me first… Not to mention another internet friend I’m not as close to also started doing this. And what I dislike is her style of ponies was already great to begin with! Maybe I’m just being selfish, but I started drawing ponies that way so I could match it more to my style when I draw other things. Now it feels like my friends are all copying me… And once again, I wouldn’t be like this if they said something like, “I like the way you do this, I want to try it too.” That’s why I’m not really resentful to the first person I mentioned. I don’t know. I’m hoping they’ll be able to find their own styles for ponies soon. Maybe I am just being selfish… -Anonymous Allow me to explain… When creating a character, it’s a good idea (not necessary, but adds to the quality of the character) for he/she/it to have a hairstyle appropriate for its personality. I am only using MLP:FIM as an example, as the show demonstrates this well. The manes of the ponies (their “hairstyles”) are designed to directly match the canon personalities of the characters.
In this case, Rarity’s mane is pompously curled to perfection, without a single strand of hair out of place. One would definitely think that this character is well-spoken and fancy, right? Now, in a clear opposite, Pinkie Pie’s mane is bouncy, somewhat messy and curly. You are given the impression that she is a happy-go-lucky, crazy sort of pony. Take note of your character’s interests, profession and lifestyle (a homeless person would not usually have neat, wavy hair!). A suitable hairstyle makes a character easier to define, not to mention adds quality and thought to the design. Have fun experimenting with different hairstyles and looks!
Cause they have nothing already why try to take that away. Not only do we not have variety in the artist world but we have stupidity, we have close minded and we have ignorance and in order to close or stop these people from breeding more ignorance we need to open the younger minded. And yes I do hold every artist responsible and ill say later why. There is no excuse for not having variety in colors, no matter where you grow up as long as you have internet access you have seen skins of different colors, and not only of the darker skin, but olive , brown and red skin. So yeah people over react to not having or changing a skin color to a lighter tone. I don’t blame them, wouldn’t you when your tired of seeing white washed characters. Isn’t there enough already? And if you don’t want an opinion on it (and don’t want responsibility on it), I say don’t post on the internet which is simple. If you don’t want to feel and receive the opinions of the very different don’t post it on the world wide web to be seen by them……this opinion goes toward the different sized as well, but thats another story. I say all of the new gen artist that grew up with lighter skinned anime and the darkest to go is tanned or if dark its dramatic like mr popo or jinx have a chance to bring the artist community closer and open up the minds to the younger artist. Thats the responsibility we have like it or not. Im sorry but the excuse for not growing up with darker skinned is bull. I seen plenty of darker skin artist drawing plenty of the peached skinned cause its more favored, think about it. The artist world is white washed stop joking yourselves. Okay not only the artist world but any world, and its a shame. Resource: http://shattered-earth.deviantart.com/art/Staring-into-another-world-291583004?offset=75#comments I DESPISE all sad attempts to try and make gijinkas ‘diverse.’ Yes, before you keep on reading, I am technically Muslim. I am non-religious, but you can trace my whole family tree to the Middle East. A WOMAN WHO IS NOT IN A MIDDLE-EASTERN COUNTRY AND IS NOT ORTHODOX DOES NOT WEAR THE HEADSCARF. If they did, I would wear one, my grandmothers would have to wear one, my sister would wear one, and my mother would have to. But do any of us? NO, BECAUSE WE ARE IN AMERICA. Also, not all Muslim people are tanned. I’m pretty pale. And, again, I don’t wear a headscarf. If you saw me, I’d look like your average dark-haired girl. Yes, many Muslim women DO look like that, but most of them are orthodox and/or living in a Middle Eastern country. Please, for the love of God, these people who do this annoy me MORE than people who make all the characters white and skinny. Research Islam if you’re going to make a character Muslim. How would you feel if I drew a humanization of a character and made them a big stereotype of who you are? I’ll won’t give examples since there are so many, but think about the stereotypical looks for people from your religion, country, or race. How would you feel if a person, MANY, from a different religion/country/race took that stereotype and with no education of it and no idea of your feelings, went ahead and drew the character as it? I’m really looking at the MLP fandom - but it’s possible it happens in other fandoms. Many people argue the nationalities of Homestuck characters, too. Please, RESEARCH THE RELIGION/COUNTRY/NATIONALITY OF WHATEVER YOU ARE MAKING THE CHARACTER. Please, tell me one Arabic word and pronounce it correctly. Please, tell me one Muslim holiday and the purpose of it. (excluding a Muslim person, of course, or a person who may be familiar with it) Note - I’m not saying everyone who does Muslim Fluttershy is a cruel heartless bitch. For all I know, the artist could be Muslim, but then again, why would they use such stereotypical looks? Still, I bet many pony artists honestly were not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings. TL;DR - Not all Muslim women are tan and wear headscarves. Don’t use popular stereotypes, offensive or not and when you are going to make gijinkas, please research whatever nationality or religion you are going to make it. -anonymous My friend says she’s really nice, too. I wish I wasn’t too shy to talk to her. picture©silent-ponytagonist/ponytag-rakugaki submitted by -engagingingentlemanlythings |
