From the mid-nineties and onwards, I learned how to draw by copying and mimicking the style of Archie’s Sonic and Knuckles comics, followed by doing the same with Sailormoon’s comic releases and the DBZ anime at the beginning of the millennium. They became my core foundation for art, followed by layers of CLAMP and Naruto.

I regret not expanding my knowledge, and I’ve been trying to relearn everything from scratch over the past couple years, and it’s such a hard challenge to repair a decade of mistakes.  looked at the art for both in a wave of nostalgia recently, and I cry knowing all the same stupid mistakes are still apparent in my art. I wish I had explored more artists and styles. I’m nowhere near the level I think I should be at my age, especially since I’ve drawn since I was very little.

The internet really opened my eyes, and unfortunately due to circumstances I haven’t had it as a resource until recently. I’ve been struggling since I’ve realized my mistakes to relearn some foundations. I have some severe art block, and I can pin several of my problems to drawing years of terrible fanart where I learned absolutely nothing.

I’m also afraid that Flash-based animations that reuse objects to speed along animations (Family Guy, Fairly Odd Parents, My Little Pony, etc) and simplistic weekly anime (Pokemon, Naruto, Bleach, etc) are going to stifle kids stylistically if that’s the only things they “study”, much like I had, all the way to adulthood. There’s worlds of other things out there, and there’s no harm in studying a little more than just your favorite tv shows or comics. I wish someone told me to explore other things when I was a kid. Maybe I’d feel better about my art now if I did.
