I do fanart, and original art. I can empathize with artists who are upset that fanart gets more attention, but I can understand why.

People search out fandom fanart with such ease. It’s easy to type “My little pony” into a search, and have it poop out results. Your original art is a bit harder to find! What could people search to find it? That’s also why the most popular fanart is made up of internet trends. Draw something for an obscure fandom, and it wouldn’t get too many +favs either! (I do fanart for webcomics which my friends make, those don’t get a more-than-usual +fav haul)

Keep going with original art. It’s worth it. If I see a nice fanart, i’ll usually look into the gallery to see what’s original. If I see it’s all fanart, i’d get a bit disappointed, because i’d like to see what an artist can make without working off somebody else’s universe. It’s super-disappointing if the original fanart is just copying the art style of the fandom it’s from, as well. :c

But it’s not so easy to find original art. You gotta understand that it sucks, but that’s the way it is.
